The other day, I found myself in a Twitter discussion when I answered someone who asked, “What’s the economic difference between a subsidy and a tax credit?” Eventually, I asked my discussion partner if he was okay with paying taxes for something he disagreed it.

The inability by Simon to answer direct questions is telling. I don’t believe that he was trying to skirt the issues or was intentionally misdirecting the conversation. I think he was being genuine. His problem was that the ideas that I presented to him were very likely outside of his paradigm. He was trying to make what I was saying fit into his worldview. He didn’t know how else to respond and so he displayed some serious cognitive dissonance.
