Slappy and I had a great evening last night. Our Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl—it’s something we’ve been waiting for our entire lives. And it finally happened in improbable fashion. Now Slappy and I don’t live and die with our sports teams. If the Eagles would have lost, it wouldn’t have been very much fun, but we would have very quickly moved on in our lives.
So there are a few issues we can glean from this. First of all, is it okay for libertarians to engage in the “bread and circuses” that seem to distract so many others? Is following professional sports an overall good or bad thing for society? There was misbehavior by some fans following the Super Bowl win and there were pockets of property damage. People tend to like to make a fan of a given team answer for their entire city or fanbase. Is identifying with a professional sports team a problem? And more generally, are sports beneficial to society or are they a distraction from more important issues?
Slappy and I are as libertarian as they come, but this episode is going to be some societal commentary on sports. It should be a real home run.
