The Supreme Court gave their ruling on whether the First Amendment rights of the Masterpiece Cakeshop owner, Jack Phillips, were violated by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission when they ruled in the gay couple’s favor who wanted to compel Phillips to bake them a wedding cake. They ruled that they were.
Of course, a lot of people don’t understand the very basics of this case and believe that the Supreme Court was deciding whether or not Phillips would have to bake the cake. People jumping to conclusions and getting basic facts wrong are nothing new, but this news does present an opportunity to discuss if a gay couple can force a baker to bake a cake and whether anyone has the right to force anyone to do business with them.
